Perhaps the most photographed building at the Mayan site of Chichen Itza is that of the Observatory, located in the south group of buildings.
Much of it remains intact, a sensational reminder of the astronomical precision which was attained by a people so very long ago. It is from the Observatory that priests measured the solstices, and observed and recorded celestial happenings.
Excavations from the site have revealed a number of burials, skulls, and offerings. It was built during two time periods; the Mayan and the Mayan-Toltec.
